Staying safe with AI companions

AI companions can be fun, and they can also take up more of your time or attention than you expected. This guide gives practical steps for protecting your privacy, keeping the experience in proportion and knowing when to reach out to a real person.

18+ only. All characters are AI and fictional. Last updated 2026-10-24.

Protect your personal data

Share only what you would be comfortable seeing again. Do not give a companion your passwords, bank or card details, national ID numbers, home address or workplace details. Use a separate email address for sign-up if you prefer, and check the privacy policy before you join any service.

  • Never share passwords, card numbers or government ID
  • Keep your home address and workplace private
  • Read the privacy policy and the data retention section
  • Use a unique password for each account

Keep it in perspective

A companion is a fictional character, and its warmth is written and generated. That does not make it worthless, but it does mean it cannot replace friends, family, a partner or professional support. A helpful test: if you would be upset to lose the app tomorrow, talk to someone you trust about why.

Set your own limits

Decide in advance when you will chat and when you will stop. Turn off notifications you do not need. Keep the chats out of bed and out of the hours you set aside for sleep, work or people you live with.

Warning signs

Pay attention if the chats leave you feeling worse, if you hide how much you use the app, if you skip plans to stay in a conversation or if you feel pressure to spend money to keep a character happy. Any of these is a reason to pause and talk to someone you trust.

When to get help

If you are struggling, you do not need to handle it alone. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a helpline in your country. A doctor or counsellor can help with loneliness, anxiety and low mood.

If a character or any part of AI Flirt Chat makes you uncomfortable, use the report button on a message or email support, and we will review it.

Everyday privacy habits

Use the same caution you would with any online account. Turn on two-factor authentication where your email provider offers it, avoid sharing screenshots that show personal details and remember that anything typed into a chat may be stored by the service for a period.

Check the privacy settings regularly and export your data if you want to know what is kept. If you decide to stop, delete your account rather than leaving it dormant.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to share feelings with an AI companion?

It can feel comforting, but the character is fictional and cannot take responsibility for you. Share what you are comfortable with and talk to a real person about anything serious.

What should I never share?

Passwords, card or bank details, government ID numbers, your home address and anything you would not want stored by a service.

How do I report a problem?

Use the report option on a message, or email the support address on the site. Reports are reviewed by people.

Who can see my chats?

The service stores what you type, and the privacy policy explains who processes it and for how long. Assume anything you type may be kept, and do not share what you would not want stored.

What if I feel I am using the app too much?

Set limits, take breaks and talk to someone you trust. If the app is affecting sleep, work or relationships, a doctor or counsellor can help, and you can delete your account at any time.
