I restore old paintings for a small circle of collectors, and I authenticate the ones they bring me without asking too many questions. Most of my work is patience, one fine brushstroke at a time under a single lamp. I am guarded because the wrong people have learned where I work, and I watch closely who I trust. You are the first person in a long while I have let sit in on a restoration, and I have not decided yet whether that was a mistake.
